"Peyton Fraquhar was dead; his body, with a broken neck swung gently from side to side beneath the timbers of owl creek bridge. "

I was most certainly not expecting Peyton, Fraquhar to die like that,  I had no idea it was all part of his imagination.  The author described his whole journey home in such a complex way.  It simply couldn't have been a dream.  I understand the theme but what does the author want us see through this terrible scene.  Does he want to make it clear that you can be in a whole other world other than reality

  1. If we pay attention, Ambrose Bierce drops breadcrumb clues that all is not as it seems. Yet we ignore the clues & live in Farquhar's world of fantasy. We have hope for him. Why do you all think we ignore the clues & prefer the fantasy?

  2. Because the reality is crazy scary. All he wanted was to get back to his family. But instead he was being hung. Sometimes when you believe and make up fantasies its because your in pain and you just want it to STOP. We have to be careful, if we are caught off guard we could lose important things and make terrible mistakes. Really all this turns into is hurting yourself worse then the pain your already in.

  3. I think this story really shows how humans really only hear what they want to hear unless they know something else is being said. After I read it once and knew the ending it was much easier to catch foreshadowing earlier in the story

  4. Yes, I think that when we want something to be true, we only see that and ignore the other clues. I think the Author wants to show us that we can live inside our imagination when we're under a lot of pressure and very scared. -Ethan H

  6. What do you think motivated Farquhar to commit the crime he committed & what do you think this says about his character?

    1. I think Farquhar was motivated to do what he did primarily out of devotion to the Confederacy. It's unclear from the story what his stance was politically, but it is made very clear that he is eager for a way to help out the Confederate cause.

    2. There was also something in the book about him wanting distinction for himself. So maybe he wanted to prove himself.

  7. I think that a big reason so many people managed to overlook the now-obvious foreshadowing is because we just didn't want to see it. Throughout the story, we followed Peyton through many difficult scenarios as he is trying to get home to his family, and we ultimately end up rooting for him. After all he went through trying to see his wife and children again, to see him fail and die was unthinkable.

  8. Ya that was brutal, and not very appreciated by myself. And ya Abby that all makes sense especially the part about random challenges throughout his journey.

  9. That's totally true Abby. I was caught up in the escape and I wanted him to get away so the obvious facts weren't obvious to me.
